I wanted to share with you some very sad news. Kim Mechling, one of our own swim family members, tragically lost her husband on Tuesday after a sudden illness.
Some of you may remember Ned as the big, gentle soul that always helped with timing. One could hear his loud booming voice yelling "GO CHARLIE" or "GO MADDIE" from anywhere on the pool deck. Ned was an avid supporter of swimming and he never missed cheering for all the kids swimming in the lane he was timing.
We will certainly miss Ned's presence at the pool.
I'm sure you all will join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to Kim, Charlie and Maddie.
A celebration of Ned’s life will be held Wednesday, July 16 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the private property on Prehm Ranch. Prehm Ranch is on the Roaring Fork River, so bug spray, sunglasses, blankets and chairs are good ideas. Tents and chairs will also be provided.
Prehm Ranch is very easy to get to. Aspen folks should come down 82 and turn left on 27th street as if they were going to Ski Sunlight. Go over the 27th street bridge and through the light. At the round about, take the second right and head toward the Glenwood Springs municipal airport on Midland Ave. At the fork in the road, stay to the left and head towards the airport. Pass the airport and follow the signs to park in the rodeo fairgrounds lot. There will be shuttle vans and a people mover from Rock Gardens/Glenwood Canyon Resort to drive people through the gates at the ranch. Those who feel like walking can. It's an easy walk.
The ceremonies will start at 5:30 with our own Derek Brown presiding. There will be tents and seating for about two hundred but we are expecting about twice that, so blankets and chairs are welcome. It is directly on the Roaring Fork River so bug spray, sun glasses, hats and/or sunscreen will be useful. It is extremely casual. If you have a cowboy hat, you can wear that in honor of Ned. Shirts are optional. There will be food, drinks, Budweiser of course and live music. Lots of room for kids to run wild. We are going to ask that the night wraps up around nine so the Conrades and Schneider families can resume their normal lives on their beautiful ranch. The obituary will run in the aspen times on Tuesday and Wednesday with these same details.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Ned Mechling Benefit Account at Alpine Bank. All proceeds will go towards Charlie’s and Maddie’s educational pursuits.
